Fashion textiles students from Amity School of Fashion Technology, Jaipur, discuss a traditional Gopashtami pichvai with artist Shyam Sharma and lean in to observe Parmanand Sharma sketching.
A new experience for us all, this project and my time in India during my Fulbright fellowship presented a most important lesson. With no choice but to cast aside the familiar trappings of the Westernized art world, I slowly learned from the artists, new friends, and neighbors that life really does imitate art and that both amount to more than a stressful onslaught of deadlines, and that things always work themselves out with mutual understanding, unconditional support, and a bit of faith.
